The State of Pará accounts for 16.66% of the Brazilian territory and 26.1% of the Brazilian Amazon region. According to studies from the Organization of American States (OAS), it has 49.9% of the main tourist attractions in the Legal Amazon - Pará, Amazonas, Maranhão, Tocantins, Roraima, Acre, Rondônia, Amapá, Mato Grosso..
Touristic Regions:
a. The Belém Center – turned to the business, events, leisure and cultural segments, including convention centers, museums, botanical gardens and beautiful beaches (including wave river beaches, rarely seen anywhere else in the world), along with the world-famous religious event, the Círio de Nazaré, in the second Sunday in October.
b. Tapajós, where the Amazon and the Tapajós rivers meet and its exuberant landscape of river beaches, waterfalls, forests, rock formations and ancient carvings offer the possibility of joining important cultural manifestations of the people of Pará such as the Sairé, in Santarém (in September) and the Tribal Festival, in Juruti (in July). The major cities are Santarém, Monte Alegre, Oriximiná, Alenquer and Óbidos.
c. Araguaia Tocantins, oriented to ecological and adventure tourism, concentrates the major fishing tournaments in the State, including the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Plant Lake Cup, and holds beautiful river beaches that can only be seen in the summer. This center also holds the main rural events in the State. The major cities are Tucuruí, Marabá and Conceição do Araguaia.
d. Marajó, with a strong ecological tourist appeal, is the largest river-marine island in the world and is located at the mouth of the Amazon River. Some of its many attractions and features include: the unique cuisine, folk tales, the Pororoca, the handicraft, its beaches and wetland landscapes, cultural manifestations and local flora and fauna, with special attention to the buffalos. The major cities are Soure and Salvaterra.
e. Atlantic Amazon, alternates beaches, floodplains, birds vivaria, wild islands and summer resorts. In this region, besides the sea, a rich and varied cultural scenery can be found which features typical rhythms such as carimbó, lundu, brega, and lambada amongst others. Some of the main cities are Salinópolis, Bragança, Maracanã, Marapanim and Vigia.
f. Xingu, is a for fishing and ecological tourism. The major part of this region is wild, untouched, but the portions inhabited by men are an agricultural frontier in expansion, whose productivity has been adding to the Brazilian production records. It holds paradisiacal landscapes, like the fishing preserve of São Benedito, the natural resorts of the Curuá River and the waterways and cascades in the course of the Xingu itself. Altamira is the main city of this center.
